The door opener has stops on it. Remove the chain from the sprocket and run the opener to the door closed position until it stops (unattached to the opening assembly. Then put the chain on with the door opener with the door closed. Put the chain on where it would be with the door in the closed position. Re-hook the chain opening assembly and the door should open. Adjust the open position (small adjustments) using a flat screwdriver in the slots on the side of the garage door opener. Good Luck.

The garage door may be reversing because of an obstruction in the path of the door. Check for any objects blocking the sensors or tracks. Additionally, the garage door opener's sensitivity settings may need adjustment if they are set too high.
Usually the door is too heavy for the opener. With the opener disconnected, try lifting the door. A properly installed door should stay at any height as you raise it. If it wants to drop, the springs need to be tightened. The door could also be binding somewhere on the door stop or the track and over loading the opener.
