It can shatter without having force exerted on it. Rapid heating and cooling causes it to expand and contract, which will eventually form hairline cracks, and can ultimately cause a window to shatter.

It is possible that you had a chip in the window. If you did then it would be significantly weakened and the temperature difference between the inside of your car and the outside would eventually cause it crack and shatter; especially if the difference was extreme which it would be if you had your heater on inside.
