Yes. There are usually 3 lanes on a normal highway/freeway/parkway or whatever you'd like to call it. The one closest to the barriers or borders between which way the car goes is the fastest lane. That is usually if you need to get somewhere fast and people almost never linger in that lane going at low speeds. The middle is for going at an average speed and usually has the most traffic. It's like the Economy section of an airplane, nothing special. The last lane, and the government might add a 4th lane, is the slowest. Usually if your a tourist and need to constantly see whcih way to go, that is the slowest lane and the only lane(s) dump-trucks, tractor trailers, and heavy vehicles are allowed to veer off into. It's also nice because they don't slow anyone down since it IS the slow lane. But it is a pain in the @$$ to try to exit while ones in front of you. Hope this helped.

When driving on a 3 way lane freeway you should know that?

If there are 3 lanes on your side of the freeway, the right-hand lane is there for vehicles to merge onto the freeway and it is the place for slower moving vehicles to drive; such as big rigs or cars towing anything. The lane in the middle is the passing lane for slow moving traffic, and it is the lane for primary travel of other than slow moving vehicles. The lane to the far left is for passing only, except when designated for specific use, like a carpool lane.

Why is the fast lane always the slowest when traffic is heavy?

Because everyone is trying to pass the slower moving traffic and most highways are posted with the sign, "Slower traffic keep right" or the left lane (passing) is marked "Through Traffic".

What is the minimum speed in the left hand lane of the interstate?

Most of the time, if you're driving below the speed limit, you are to remain in that right hand lane. Now there are some places where they do place a minimum speed in the left lane which is below the speed limit. On I25, between Castle Rock and Denver, CO, there are signs indicating a minimum speed limit of 55 MPH in the left lane while the actual speed limit of the road is 65. Even in these instances, it's ill advised. If you're not doing the speed limit, you really need to stay in the right lane. The minimum speed on Interstate Highways is posted at 45 MPH. Vehicles incapable of travelling at least that minimum speed must not travel on the interstate highway system, or they must be granted a special-use permit to travel on them. The right hand lanes are reserved for slower moving vehicles and the outside (or where they exist, center lanes) are reserved for traffic which is moving at a legal speed faster than the right lane traffic, or are used when 'passing' slower moving vehicles. Most Interstates have a posted maximum speed at which traffic may move, but on the occasion of passing slower moving vehicles may momentarily exceed when making a 'passing' maneuver.Another PerspectiveActually, in many states the left hand lane is not governed by a "minimum speed". It is to be used only for passing. You cannot coast in that lane and hold up other cars that want to pass. In Massachusetts many motorists monopolize the left lane thinking that they can coast at the posted speed limit and control everyone else's speed. They can't. If you're not passing other, slower moving cars, then you need to pull over to the right lane. The left land is for passing and you can be stopped and cited by police for misusing the left lane.

What does slower traffic keep right sign means?

The slower traffic keep right sign means that drivers who choose to drive less than the speed limit should stay in the right-hand lane. For example, 18-wheelers going up a hill often experience decreased speed because of the weight they haul. Unless passing an even slower vehicle, the slower truckers need to stay in the right-hand lane. Vehicles driving significantly below posted speed limits should also use their flashers until they are able to match the posted speed limit.
