From most to least likely:
1. Starter solenoid is not getting power
2. Starter solenoid is bad
3. Starter gear is stripped
4. Flywheel ring gear is stripped
Age of starter is not really relevant. It is possible to get a defective one.
Check electrical connections. Some cars have a separate wire to the solenoid.
Remove starter, look for obvious damage to gears.
If you don't see anything really glaring, like a chunk of flywheel missing, take the starter to any auto parts chain store. Most of them have a testing setup and do the testing for free.
Whirring Noise But Will Not Start
If you try to start the car and you hear the whirring noise and when you let off the key and it stops, that usually means that the gear in the starter isn't engaging the motor's flywheel. Try replacing the starter's bendix unit.
What a bendix is, is a relay with a forked assembly that forces the gear of the starter to slide forward on the starter motor's shaft and engage the flywheel, and then after you move the key from the start to run position, it causes the relay to disengage by using a spring in the assembly.
They're not too hard to change and generally not too expensive to replace. You'll probably have more difficulty getting the starter motor out of the car than changing the bendix unit. It's a relatively straight forward repair, and if you don't run into any serious problems with having enough space to easily remove the starter without going through all types of contortions trying to get around steering suspension or linkage parts, it should take around 45 minutes or so to do, start to finish.
Note, "Bendix" is a brand name for a starter drive. Bendix makes many parts. The starter drive you purchase may be made by someone other than "Bendix".
BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY'S POSITIVE WIRE BEFORE STARTING YOUR REPAIR.
The noise is difficult to diagnose over a forum, but if the battery is charged correctly, and is hissing as you put it, the starter motor may not be working correctly, get a second opinion from a garage
Well it could be a number of things. If the car will not start or even turn over it may have seized the engine or spun a connecting rod bearing which is a major problem. If it does start up again and the loud noise continues, sounding like a knock u should not try to drive it to the shop. Shut it off and call a towing company. If it starts back up and doesn't make any noise it may be fine. Just keep an ear out for pinging and knocking sounds.
when you turn your key and you only hear humming noise, the problem will most likely be that the starter is not engaging the fly wheel, its turning but is not sliding forward to do its job. have the starter check.
Hey, Try the follwing -although its hard to comment without further details! does the car engine make any noise when the key is turned? Yes whirring - check fuel and all spark lead conections. May be hundreds of things - take it to a garage. could be blocked carb, blocked fuel filter, dead fuel pump etc No or clicks - battery may be flat try charged battery.
noise pollution
Just a noisy pump? low fluid level ? what stays ON?
Starter relay is broken
A/C compressor? A/C compressor?
Depends on what's wrong with the starter, exactly. It could be whirring sound, a clicking sound, no sound at all, etc.
There are a number of reasons why your car may be making a whirring sound when accelerating. You may have a lose part for example.
I am hearig a similar whirring noise in my 04 Maxima that increases in pitch as the car accelerates. I suspect it is the idler puley. I'm planning to replace it in a couple of weeks and will report ba.
That is the sound of the air intake. It's normal unless grossely audible which could indicate a bad seal in the intake.
Yes. When it starts to get low you will start to notice a grinding or whirring noise when you turn the wheel. As it continues to get lower the noise becomes more constant and loud. I personally think it sounds like a transformer (robot) that needs its hinges oiled.
Well there are a lot of things that make whirring noise it all depends on what your doing if it happens on brakeing u prob need rotors if it stops when brakeing u need pads if its when driving could be tires also a rim could be bent that also happens a lot of things make noise u have to be more specific u have to determine the conditions in which it happens to narrow it down
The car has an electric cooling fan that is temperature controlled. The fan will sometimes run for a while after the car is turned off to help cool the engine. If the fan doesn't stop after 20 minutes, then you can start looking into problems with the relay, or the coolant temperature sensor.
why does my starter make a loud screeching noise when i start it?
your starter probably.
