Well i have read in a book that they were drawn sideways because in their afterlife, it was believed in order to have all body parts with you, it must have been painted sideways so you could see every body part. That's why they also have legs and hands sticking out like that. Like a Pharaoh's would be painted like that, but you might be wondering then why didn't they just face the person forward? The Egyptians also thought if their whole face would be drawn, the whole face would express too much power. It would be too human, so they decided that was the best way to draw them. They had really weird beliefs not 100 sure on this, but I'm pretty sure that's why.
