Yoshi, Dry Bones or ROB. They have good acceleration and a fair bit of speed. If you can knock someone out with a shell then they have to start again until they reach their max speed unless you're one of the characters that I have said.

The fastest character for each size class are as follows:

Small Characters: Toadette

Medium Characters: Yoshi, Mario

Large Characters: Funky Kong

Arguably, the fastest character is Funky Kong. However, Funky Kong on the Spear is faster than Daisy on the Mach Bike, but, Funky Kong on the Flame Runner is slower than Daisy on the Mach Bike. So in the end I would say Daisy and Funky Kong are tied.

I don't really think there is a fastest character, but I choose Toad every time because I don't know if it's just me, but he seems to go faster than everyone else ;)
