The Toyota Echo has an inline 4 cylinder engine. The number one cylinder on all inline 4 cylinder engines is the first piston at the front of the engine. The front of the engine is the end that is opposite the transmission.

Wire , lots and lots of wiring , but you need to be more specific , a Echo uses 4 coils , 1 for each cylinder , and being a mechanic myself at a Toyota dealership , this is rare. Make sure your not having condensation problems , ex water around the coils , as this will cause arcing and it will look like the coil is not delivering its spark.

On the 91 Toyota 4 Runner 6 cylinder the passengers side, closest to the grill is number one. The driver's side closest to the grill is number two. Passenger's side is 1-3-5, driver's side is 2-4-6. Hope this helps.
