Depends. Older cars have metal gas tanks, and, with proper proceedures, again, proper steps, they can be welded. Your radiator repair shops will usually help you out with that. They fill it with water, after doing a few other tricks, which, I wont go into because this is very dangerous, and should be left to a pro. Newer cars all have plastic tanks in them now, and have to be replaced.
