On my '96 1500 Sierra Z71 5.7L the starter is located on the bottom of the block, towards the back, on the passenger side. Some Starters are on the left or right side of the Block. Or if not, inside the engine, under the Intake.

It's located on the passenger side, on the bellmouth of the transmission case. The cables can be hard to get to. It's easier to take the two mounting bolts out and drop the starter out before disconnecting the wires. Watch for shims when dropping starter.

Remove the 4 bolts from the plastic cover over the transmission. It is connected to the transmission right above the front of the plastic cover....more on the right side. If you law down behind the passenger front wheel and look up at the engine on your side you will see the starter.
