The Earth is a rock flying through space. On it's rind and beneath it's thin gas halo is a little zoo of which we are but one exhibit. We are part of the Earth and we are most certainly alive, thus, the Earth is alive. I think the real question here is: "Are the rocks alive?". Well, if they are, we do not possess the technology or patience to determine it. I would guess if rocks are sentient, it would take them thousands of years to complete a thought. Remember, some rocks are billions of years old.

Of course you can find animals, plants and fungi on the ground, in the sea and in the air, where conditions are not too extreme. But simple, single-celled bacteria and other simple organisms can be found in a much wider range of environments. Living organisms can live inside the ice caps in Antarctica and the Arctic, buried under deep layers of solid ice. They can live deep underground as well, deep within the Earth's crust, feeding on minerals and being warmed from within. Some birds and insects can fly pretty high, but bacteria can be taken up to the top of the atmosphere. So while complex animals and plants are confined to the more comfortable regions of Earth, there's some life everywhere in Earth's atmosphere, oceans, surface and crust.

However, this layer of life - the biosphere - is extremely thin when compared to the entire planet. If Earth was the size of a classroom globe, the biosphere would be no thicker than a postage stamp.

There are two ways of defining Earth as a living planet. First and most apparent is that Earth has life on it. Second, unlike some other planets, Earth is geologically active.

No. Earth is not a living organism.
