The first glue patent was granted in Britain, around 1750, and was for fish glue. This was quickly followed by patents for many of the then-known and frequently centuries-old types of glue and methods of manufacture.
Cyanoacrylates were discovered in 1942 during research into plastic gun-sights for war use. The substance was considered useless because it stuck to absolutely everything. Almost a decade later, researchers for Eastman Kodak, Harry Coover and Fred Joyner, realized cyanoacrylates might have their uses after all, and by 1958, Super Glue was on the market and rapidly becoming part of urban legends.
The very first examples we've discovered of glue date back to around 200,000 BC (BCE), but glue would have been used much earlier. The first glues, and these adhesives continue in use today, came from plants. Substances such as gums or resins (natural rubber is one example) would have easily been discovered, probably quite by accident, and put to good use by ancient man who was, just as is modern man, always on the lookout for new and easier ways to do things.
Later, plant substances were mixed or otherwise treated to obtain compounds such as tar, and later still, animal products such as bones were used. This remains the case today, and is where the expression 'headed for the glue factory', said of old or ill horses originated.
Casein - milk products treated with rennet, as used to make cheese - was used for adhesive purposes in the nineteenth century, as was starch and other materials, all still in use today.
The simple water-and-flour combination, used by young children for play purposes, has been known for millennia, and other substances such as egg whites have been recorded in use for various adhesive purposes; like flour and water, these are still used domestically.
One very basic use of egg whites as glue is the procedure whereby washed and dried grapes are dipped in lightly-beaten egg white and then into caster sugar. Left to dry on a wire rack, they produce sparkling, frosted grapes which, simply piled into attractive shallow wine glasses, make a delicious addition to dinner or cocktail tables.
Mankind has used glues since before Roman times. Many glues existed that we don't even know much about.
During the past century Super glue was invented in 1942 by Dr. Harry Coover and Elmer's first glue, Glue-All was first marketed in 1947. Since then Elmer's has made many new and different glues including their latest, a new Spray Contact glue, on the shelves just recently. Many other companies have invented thousands of glues for all kinds of different jobs in the past 70 years.
In 1973 the gluesticks were invented
There are thousands of different glues, and possibly many of the early ones (including super glue) were invented by accident.
Dr Harry Coover was a scientist who studied the power of glue and accidentally invented Super Glue.
because using a bottle makes a huge mess
Ancient peoples have been making glue from sap, vegetables and charcoal for thousands of years. There are many different formulations. -Before that, I would guess they had no easy ways of joining things.
Dr. Harry Coover invented super glue
Gorilla glue was invented by a primate that kept dropping bananas.
Paul E. Cope invented Thermo plastic glue also known as "Hot Glue" it is used in Hot Glue guns.
Glue sticks were invented in Germany in 1969.
In 1973 the gluesticks were invented
Glue was invented thousands of years ago. No record of who did it.
i invent glue every year
Dr Harry Coover invented super glue.
Superglue was invented in 1942, but not actually marketed as a glue until the mid 1950's.
This was invented way back in 1942.
He invented it on accident
