It meant bad news for blacks. Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats) started the KKK and were responsible for Jim Crow laws, voter intimidation, etc. Blacks at that time were mostly Republican.
Democrats also fired the first shots of the Civil War.
It's interesting that the majority of blacks today are Democrats.
