Nwoye is interested in the missionaries firstly due to natural curiosity. A white man as well as the fellow African travellers were a curiosity to Nwoye and the entire village.
Nwoye later becomes interested in the missionaries due to their songs, which spoke to the pain in his heart. He seeks to reconcile the feelings he has towards the tribe and it's traditions. Nwoye does this by eventually abandoning the old traditions and joining the Christians, whom offer an alternative, something Nwoye did not have before.
Nwoye is drawn to the Christian songs which reminds him of the same soul as his mother's stories. He tries to learn more about the Christians without being seen as too closely associated with them at first. Eventually, Nwoye converts to Christianity.
