A loosely constructed 1500 ft.sq. home with lots of single pane glass facing south, will require an a/c unit roughly three times the size of a tightly constructed home with double or triple pane windows with shades that may be closed. Square footage does not work. A heating and cooling load should be run by an experienced contractor with a copy of the calculations being given to the homeowner along with the "free estimate". Any contractor that does not use a compass or at least know from the terrain, which way south is, should be dismissed as inexperienced. Correctly sizing a/c is an art, with the right unit providing the proper amount of dehumidification and a/c resulting in occupant comfort. B Cool lc
