Yes, the timing changes with RPM with internal regulator, set the timing so that the performance will be pleasant and the motor will still not knock during idle. With higher octane fuel you can set the ignition to begin sooner, with low-octane fuel (such as was used in 1974) you would have to stick with that factory settings, note that most of the world does not offer option to tank such poor fuels as were available in 1974.
