Art is the study of the balance of elements within a given genre. For example, painters will manipulate the elements of color, light, texture, space, shapes, gradient, juxtaposition of shapes, even social/political/philosophical/religious themes in order to arrive at what they determine to be balance, or a right relationship. For music some of the elements would be tone, tambre, attack, silence, complexity (one sound or several?) repetition, harmonic sub-structure. Religion is the practice of prescribed formal or informal rituals/prayers designed to bring about communion with a deity, to elevate the consciousness, deepen awareness, usually to facilitate in petition, contrition, Thanksgiving and/or praise of a deity. For believers religion could be seen as the practice of developing a 'right relationship' between the self and a deity. There is a theoretical or conceptual overlap between art and religion, but they can and very often do operate independently.
