If you go to Singer.com, there is a place to look up your serial number and find out the aproximate age of your machine. The 201 itself was made from about 1935 through the 1950's.(The Encylcopedia of Antique Sewing Machines by Charles Law: Third Edition) The k simply means it was made at the Factory in Kilbowie(sp?) Scotland.
Go to ismacs.net,I have the same machine and understand it may be quiet valuable...
The serial number of your machine would indicate it was manufactured in 1888. Singer machines manufactured prior to 1900 are considered vintage and are highly valued by collectors. For maximum value, the machine should be in good condition and have all its parts, including foot pedal and bobbin case. To verify the age of your machine and its possible value, call a Singer rep at 1-800-4-Singer. Watch E-Bay to see what buyers are paying for machines of this vintage. You can also check with local antique shops for an appraisal.
The Kenmore sewing machine 148.19371 was produced from 1976 to 1977.
There is not a model 14814220 for the Kenmore Vintage Sewing machine; this number is the part number.

An electric sewing machine requires good eye and hand coordination. The speed of the machine is controlled by a food pedal. The user of the machine must be tall enough to sit comfortably in front of the machine and have their feet on the ground to control the foot pedal. By approximately fourth or fifth grade, most children have the physical coordination to use a sewing machine, and are old enough to recognize that the sharp needle can harm them if their hands or fingers get too close to the needle. Children should use an electric sewing machine only while being supervised by an adult. A number of sewing machine manufacturers have designed sewing machines for very young children. Some of these are powered by a hand crank and some are electric. The manufacturers print the recommended age for users of the machine on the front of the machine's packaging.
Stating an actual value on the sewing machine has several factors. The condition it's in, the extra's it comes with, the age, whether or not it has a case and the condition of the case, and, often times, the color as well. I believe the serial number AL313945 belongs to a 1953 Singer 221, or as more commonly referred to, the Featherweight. Even though this year isn't extra old compared to Singer's timeline it is still a sought after machine. It is said that in mint condition with a mint case and with everything that originally came with it, they have fetched as much as a couple thousand dollars. In most cases however, working machines of this type and year generally go anywhere from $100 to $400.
There is no substitute for a good quality sewing machine oil. One of the biggest causes of problems with sewing machines is that oil has been used that turns to gum or even a varnish like film with age. Sewing machine oil is a white mineral oil, meaning it is clear and has no smell. The oil has a light viscosity and will not collect on the machine's gears. It is usually marketed as machine or sewing machine oil. Cooking oil, car oil, and 3-in-one oil should not be used as substitutes.
it has adapted to modern technology to suit this day age and our needs
