The spatial position of light refers to the direction of light relative to the subject. Assuming that the object is facing the camera, from where is the light striking the object? It can be any of these:
- Front
- Back
- Side
- Top, or
- Bottom
Top and Bottom light both of these types of lighting are really just variations of side lighting. However, their impact is different.
Bottom lighting is when the light is placed below the object and is directly pointing up. If you've ever held a flashlight below your face to tell a scary story, you were using bottom lighting. The shadows created by bottom light feel eerie for a reason -- this is the most unnatural light. Very few examples of bottom lighting exist in the natural world. Very few examples exist in the art world as well.
