Although lead improves paint performance, it is a dangerous substance. It is especially damaging to children under age six whose bodies are still developing. Lead causes nervous system damage, hearing loss, stunted growth, and delayed development. It can cause kidney damage and affects every organ system of the body. It also is dangerous to adults, and can cause reproductive problems for both men and women.

What is the difference between flake white hue oil paint and flake white oil paint?

Flake white hue doesn't contain the lead which is considered dangerous. The EU in their wisdom decided to ban flake white or cremnitz white which has now been withdrawn from art shops and from the web and the oil paint maker such as Winsor and Newton and Michael Harding have discontinued their lines in this product.

Most paint companies had stopped using lead in their paint at that time, however, never assume that paint is lead free. Use a lead paint test to determine if lead if present prior to sanding or scraping.

Does paint contain lead?

You can buy LeadCheck lead test kits at hardware stores and lumber and home improvement stores. They are fairly cheap and work well enough if you don't happen to own a mass spectrometer. These kits work sometimes and are not approved by HUD. If children are involved, find a DEQ or EPA lead inspector to test thoroughly. In any building painted prior to 1978 with children or pregnant women using it, assume lead paint is present and follow lead-safe work practices for any remodeling or paint disturbing.DEQ is Department of Environmental Quality. EPA website has more info on lead paint dangers and managementGoogle LEAD INSPECTORS or Dust Sampling Technicians. They should be using paint chip samples, special wet wipe tests, and an xRf spectrometer (which costs $10,000+)

What happens if you get lead in your hand?

If you are concerned about lead poisoning, which is the only major ailment that could be contracted from lead, having lead in your hands will not cause it. To get lead poison, you would need to inhale or somehow diffuse lead inside of you. Even then it would still take a considerable amount to give you lead poisoning.

Can you paint over lead?

You can paint over lead paint. However, you do not want to sand or scrape the lead paint beforehand. This will create dust that you may breathe in and that is dangerous.

How do you get lead poisoning?

There are several ways to get lead poisoning. The metal lead is taken into the body by 2different routes. They are inhaling lead, usually in the form of lead dust, and by ingesting lead- you swallow something with lead on it- or in it. Lead has been used not only as the pure metal lead in things like fishing sinkers, plumbing solder, bullets, etc, but also as an oxide of lead in older paints, mixed in plastics, etc. When working with lead, or products that contain lead, it is important to avoid inhaling dusts or vapors from the work. A respirator that is rated to protect against dusts should be used (the 99 cent dust masks do NOT do this) clothing that is contaminated with lead dust should be washed separately from other clothing. After working with materials that contain lead, WASH exposed skin with soap and water before eating, smoking or drinking. Lead paint is especially dangerous to small children- the paint may flake and chip off- and lead causes the paint to have a sweet taste. Lead based paint should be removed or covered. Do a computer search for EPA lead paint for some good information. There are simple kits to test paint for lead available at most home improvement stores. Lead is NOT absorbed through intact skin.

How do you perform tests for lead in paint?

A qualified inspector is the one who will be able to perform tests for lead in paint. Samples of the paint are taken in order to be tested. One way that you can determine if you should worry about lead paint is to find out when your home was built. Any homes built after 1978 should not have lead paint in them.
