A rose and sword tattoo represents a type of yin-yang. A sword means war, destruction, and death. The rose represents live, peace, tranquility, and of course beauty and grace. The rose stops the sword from harming, the sword balances out that by stopping the rose from creating everything on earth to be peaceful. No matter how much we may hate war, we need war to balance out life.

Roses represent love. The red rose was often tattooed on a 'Ladies Man' in the old days because red roses can look like a vagina and it was an old tattoo code for that. Nowadays they just mean love in general - but it's still considered bad luck by many to tattoo a dead rose as that is supposed to make the tattooed person unlucky in love ( love will always die).
a tattoo can be considered or represent anything the tattoee wants it to be...
understand you! (kiss)
A dark purple rose is usually called a black rose, and is a symbol for death or despair. This is my understanding at least!
