Blood can enter the heart through either the superior or inferior vena cava. After this, it enters the right atrium, passes through the tricuspid valve, enters the right ventricle, and passes through the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery. From there, it enters the lungs, become oxygenated, and reenters the heart by way of the pulmonary veins. It goes into the left atrium, passes through the mitral valve, and enters the left ventricle. Next it passes through the aortic valve, enters the aorta, and it is then pumped through the rest of the body.

  • The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood to all parts of the body.
  • The heart consists of 4 chambers. These are: Left and right atrium (small chambers at the top of the heart) and the left and right ventricles (larger chambers at the bottom of the heart). Note: The left ventricle is stronger than the right; this is because the left ventricle pumps blood to ALL parts of the body and the other side pumps blood to the lungs only.
  • When the heart contracts (also known as systole), blood is forced out of the heart and flows through the blood vessels (veins/arteries/capilliaries) to all parts of the body (including the lungs).
  • During systole, the right side pumps blood (low in oxygen) to the 2 lungs through the (left and right) pulmonrary arteries. This blood (now rich in oxygen after entering the lungs) returns to the heart and this time it enters the left atrium and then flows into the left ventricle. The blood then is forced out of the heart through the Aorta (the main blood vessel at the top of the heart) and is pumped to all parts of the body (except the lungs) when systole occurs.
  • At the same time (while the above steps are happening), blood in the right side of the heart is pumped to the lungs during systole. As mentioned above, the blood goes from the lungs and enters the left atrium (via the pulmonrary veins).

Other notes:

Diastole: The time when the heart is relaxed (or not contracting or pumping). In other words, the time when the heart is at rest (very short period of time).

The average pulse rate for an adult is 72 beats per min.
