The Himalayan Mountains were formed from a convergent (with subduction) boundary. The dense Indian plate is oceanic (meaning it has a high density) and is being pushed under the less dense Eurasian plate, which is continental.

In short, tectonic forces. The Indian sub-continent originally lay alongside southern Africa. From here it was moved due north until it collided with the Asian landmass, and it continues in this action today.

That is why the Himalayan mountains are so high. You can trace the path of rivers that start their course in the Tibetan Plateau, and which eventually drain into SE Asia. Their course has been displaced by the movement of India.
