It depends. A traditional Samoan tattoo design can be passed down from generations in a family and/or village. Back in the old days, each family and village in Samoa had their own design to distinguish themselves from other villagers and familes. All traditional Samoan tattoos come with a meaning and/or symbolism of some sort. Whether it tells the story of ones ancestors or the story of the dreams of the familys' future.

Some of the popular tattoos for a Samoan are geometric patterns based on ancient designs and often denote rank and status. Today, there is a strong revival of traditional tattooing as a symbol of cutural identity.

More so than anything, Polynesian tattoos incorporate the four basic elements; earth, air, wind and fire. The way that they are put together and what they represent are usually custom designed for the specific person wearing them. In many cases the tattoos that they wear are highly symbolic and usually display their lineage, their profession, their family, etc. This is why it is VERY disrespectful to simply copy a tattoo that you see on someone, as this is usually a very custom made piece for that specific person. It is best to go to a tattoo artist who has a lot of knowledge about these kinds of designs, and can create a custom piece for you that will have the same symbolism but will be made for you, or they can create a piece that looks the same, but has no meaning to it at all.

How are Henna tattoos different from traditional tattoos?

Henna is painted on and is temporary, but a traditional tattoo is permanent.Henna "tattoos" are applied topically, using a stylus or other implement to apply a paste, which is left to set (dry) and then washed (or peeled) off leaving a red-ish brown design.Henna tattoos are a temporary personal adornment. Well attended a henna design will last 2 days to a week.Henna designs vary from simple pieces the size of a half-dollar, to complex traditional pieces that take a whole day to apply.Traditional tattoos are applied by using an implement (needle, gun, etc.) to break the skin and allow pigment to permanently stain the design into your flesh.A traditional tattoo is a permanent form of personal adornment. With care they can be crisp and clear for years, but time and gravity work on the skin and its elasticity making older tattoos less crisp.Certain of the colours now found in permanent tattoos have "fading" issues and may need to be retouched over time.Traditional tattoos can be removed using laser treatments but there is always some scarring.Traditional tattoos also come in many varied sizes and designs, from the size of a quarter to full body. There are some tattoos used cosmetically, to make "permanent" eyeliner, lipstick etc, or to cover some scars/blemishes.The traditional tattoos seen today include such things as portraits, team logos, cartoon characters, as well as tribal designs, florals, quotations, religious symbols, zodiac signs, and anything else the person wearing them can think of and have an artist design.

What does a Polynesian tattoo symbolize?

The ta Moko and the Whakapapa respectively, denote to all who can read it who you are, who your family is, what you do for a living, special accomplishments, representations of nature and of the spirits, and all the things that make you...you. To them it is a second skin which they take quite seriously. It is extremely offensive to Maori, and Samoans for that matter, if you simply copy designs that are on other people, as that is a wholly custom design for that person and is unique in it's own way. Instead, they prefer that outsiders who love the art get a variant of it called Kirituhi.
