In my opinion paintings by Erv Johnson, who specialized in acrylic on suede, are among the finest expressions of artistic ability in this extremely limited genre. From his choice of subjects, usually Native American pottery and similar themes, to the delicate recreation of the object onto the suede, Mr. Johnson's work reflects his skill and devotion to capturing the realism and beauty of his subjects. When you see one of his paintings, you immediately know it is his, even before seeing his distinctive signature.

I first met Erv Johnson in the 1970s at an art show Santa Fe, NM and purchased five of his wonderful pieces for around $400. In the 1990s I met him again in Cave Creek, AZ at a Thunderbird Artists show. By then the prices of his work had risen considerably.

Unfortunately, in the last decade, contact with Mr. Johnson has been impossible to make. There is some indication that he became ill and has dropped out of circulation. Since the 1990s there does not appear to have been new pieces of his work to appear on the market. We can hope he is doing well.

If the known body of Erv Johnson's work is all that will be, in my opinion, the value of this man's amazing talent as shown in the beautiful paintings, will continue to rise considerably. Auction sales in the thousands of dollars will not surprise me.
