My mom bought hers 15+ years ago. As for starting not sure my moms has had problems with the thread knotting near the bobbin. This is very frustrating to a new sewer (I was a new sewer). How ever if you can run a stitch through and stop and start on a new line your machine may not have any problems.

Every sewing machine is a little different, so be sure to read your manual. You want to make sure that the machine is threaded correctly from the top (through the mechanisms and through the needle) and the bottom (called the bobbin.) Most sewing machines have a foot pedal, which you step on as you position the fabric to pass under the needle.
It actually has no on/off switch and no light on it. You only need to plug it in and push the foot pedal to start sewing.
The hand wheel on a sewing machine is primarily used to raise the needle in order to feed or remove the work (seam, zipper, button or whatever you are sewing) into or out of the machine. It is also used to advance the work slowly to reach a certain point manually, where you might again resume sewing.
Generally, you'll need industrial sewing machines such as the Consew brand. They can be more expensive, but they sew faster and are more durable than home machines.
His machine (the sewing machine) helped start the sewing industry.

Most antique sewing machines do not display the model number anywhere on the machine. If the machine is made by Singer, you can cross the serial number to a model number and "birthdate" at singerco.com. If the machine is made by some other company, you will need to do some research. Needlebar.org has hundreds of photos of antique sewing machines and might be a good place to start looking.
I don't know when Issac Singer began experimenting with sewing machines but the official starting year of the company was 1851. I believe that is when they brought out the Model 1. I have an old American Heritage magazine(book) from 1951 that has an ariticle about the 100th anniversary of the company

It is best to start with a working knowledge of sewing machines. You could probably get some help from your local sewing machine repair shop. Let the owner know what you want and see if you can get some help there.
