How many sides are you painting and what is the unit?

It depends on the height of the ceilings. If they are 10 feet, that would put the painted area at 400 square feet. Paint covers approx 350 - 400 square feet per gallon over a sealed surface, depending on the texture of the wall so it would take about a gallon of paint for one coat. Lower ceilings will use a little less, cathedral or tall ceilings more. Add in another gallon if you are painting the ceiling.

The equation for finding square footage is length x width x height.
Once you have that number subtract any large areas you do not intend to paint (windows, doors etc - height x width)
Determine if you intend to do one coat or two, (two is recommended so double your area).
Generally speaking a gallon of paint will cover approximately 400 square feet. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and order a bit more than you need. This will give you the extra you may need for touch-ups or in case of a minor spill or miscalculation.

First determine the square footage.

Height of wall - times - total circumference of room - less major openings - equals sq. ft.

Next read the label of the can of paint. It will give you the approximate coverage.

Assume you will get the minimum amount of coverage listed and remember you will most likely need two coats (unless the colour is very dark, in which case you may need three or even four coats to completely cover).

If you are buying a custom (or mixed) colour it is better to err on the side of too much, as even with the new computer matching technology available EVERY can mixed will be just slightly different. That is why you should "box" (mix together all cans of the same colour) your paint, to assure perfection.
