If you have the owner's manual, it will show you how many quarts of oil this thing will take. If not, then the best way to go about it, is to put in 4 quarts, start and run the engine for a couple of minutes, shut it off, wait a couple of minutes, check the oil level on the dipstick, and add accordingly. But, do not ever overfill the crankcase with oil-Never above the full mark.

According to the 1996 Ford Ranger Owner Guide :

With engine oil filter change :

The 2.3 liter four cylinder engine takes ( 5.0 U.S. quarts )

The 3.0 liter V6 engine takes ( 4.5 U.S. quarts )

The 4.0 liter V6 engine takes ( 5.0 U.S. quarts )

According to the Haynes Repair Manual....Put 4 quarts in initially then add more after the engine has run. They mentioned that the 6 cylinder engine has a 6 quart capacity.
