Your answer depends on the gauge that you knit with the yarn and needles that you want to use and the size of the afghan that you want to make.
Can you do the math?
look at the pattern...... it usually says how much..... i.e.: 5 skeins of yarn As noted above, the pattern generally states how much yarn to use for that pattern. If you are trying to design your own pattern, however, then the process is more complicated. There is no general rule for how much yarn in a pattern, even as to type of pattern, because each is so different. Different scarf patterns, for example, would take different amounts of yarn. Generally speaking, I can probably make a scarf if I have 7 to 10 ounces of yarn. If I am making a hat for a child, I can do it with one 3.5 ounce skein with yarn leftover. For an adult, it depends on the pattern. Sometimes one skein would be enough, sometimes two would be needed. Afghans require more yarn, but amount varies with yarn, hook, and the size of the afghan as well as the pattern. One can take a baby afghan pattern and use chunky yarn to give a larger afghan, but amount of yarn required will be different. If you have a pattern and it gives you the yarn amount in skeins but not ounces, and you want to use a different yarn, then you need to find out how many ounces in that type of yarn, then buy the required ounces in a yarn in the same weight category.
Your answer depends on the size of the crochet needle you want to use. First, crochet a gauge, so that you have the basic information you need to calculate your raw material requirements.
The size of the needle depends on the gauge of the pattern you are using. If you are not using a pattern, or are using a pattern that has no gauge, then check the label of the yarn used. Most labels today will give you a size of needle that they recommend for that specific yarn.
If the pattern specifies to buy xx number of balls (or skeins), it should also give the yarn name. For example, it might say 3 skeins of Red Heart Soft but not give the ounces. Then you might look up Red Heart Soft online. Find out how many ounces in a skein, and then multiple 3 x that number. If you want to buy a different yarn, in the same weight class, you would know how many ounces to buy.
The Nurse painting are premised on medical romance novels, of a pulp fiction that has its own section in Richard Princes upstate library for this recent series the artist transfers enlarge ink-jet reproductions of book covers to canvas making out all supporting characters and text other than the littles to applying layers of smudge and dripping pigment. His lund palette emphalize then kitsch quality of the imgery aquamarine blues, emerald greens, sunset oranges and dense blacks swirl around the nurse accestuating their crisp white uniforms and prim starched hats. Prince paints the mouth our with semitransparent white surgical masts which along with the skeins of dripping crimson red paint that seep over formed from "angles of mercy" to sinister hospital bandits terrifying in them proximity to blood body processes and death with each image prince conflates the various social and sexual stereotypes embodied by the figure of a nurse including good Samaritan naughty seductress old battleaxe and devil incarnate. He depicts her as both a victimizer and victim a vamp undone by desire.
How much yarn you need to make any afghan depends on the hook you are using, the weight of the yarn and the pattern you are making. If you are using bulky yarn it will take a different amount than sport or worsted yarn, to make the same pattern. The amount of yarn used also varies depending on the stitch being used. For example, an afghan made entirely in single crochet will use more yarn than one made using double or triple crochet. There are so many different yarn types with each being a different number of yards and ounces that it is difficult to determine which yarn you are thinking of using. Just to give a very rough estimate, say you are using Red Heart Super Saver worsted yarn which is 364 yards in 7 ounces, you could estimate a need of perhaps 7 skeins to make a twin size afghan (about 2500 yards). That is a VERY rough estimate. But again, there are so many variables. Note that a lighter weight yarn will take more to get to the same finished size as a worsted weight blanket. If you are able to make a swatch of the yarn you are considering, you can figure how much you need from the swatch by matching how much yarn the swatch takes and the size of the swatch. Just multiply it out to the size you want. That will give you an idea of how much yarn you need.
I just bought 3 skeins of blue yarn to crochet a sweater for my granddaughter.

Skol is a discontinued 100% Pure New Norwegian Wool. Its worsted weight and was made in 1.6oz/84 yard skeins.
There isn't a way to figure out how many skeins of worsted yarn would equal 18 oz. You would need to look at the yarn, and see how many ounces are in that particular skein and go from there. The word "weight" in yarn refers to the size or thicknessof the strand of yarn, not an actual ounce, pound, gram or kilogram. Then the size or thickness would be measured by how many stitches are in 4 inches. The Yarn Council of America has a guideline for "weight" measurement for yarns. The reason there are variables in the actual skein ounces, grams weight, is that different fibers of the same length would weigh differently--some are lighter or heavier than others.
It really depends on the pattern you use. Some require significantly more yarn than others. A simple DC stitch would use less than a SC stitch (for example).
Since the regular Red Heart skein is four ounces, the pound package is four skeins for your conversion chart.
Yarn comes in skeins and in balls.

if you mean a basic knitting worsted weight for afghans normally in yarn shops they are 100 grams skeins which is 3 1/2 ounces.. if you mean in knitting stores the smaller skeins for children's and adult fine garments they are 50 grams 1 3/4 ounces .. years ago they used to be 4 ounces and 2 ounces , but like the coffee cans they shrunk .. in craft stores the large skeins can be 200 grams or even more .. but craft yarn is exactly what it says CRAFT not for garments .. unless it states it is for afghans or sweaters etc .. so be careful of craft store yarns and make sure if you buy there that you buy for the right purpose
