If kept chilled in preservation solution, donated organs can remain viable for transplantation for a duration ranging from a few to many hours, although it is best if they are transplanted as quickly as possible after the donation surgery.

Typical storage times are 30 hours or less for a kidney, less than 12 hours for a pancreas or liver, and less than 6 hours for a heart or lungs. These times vary because of the relative speed at which deterioration begins in the organs' tissues.

How long can you survive cardiomyopathy without a heart transplant?

It depends on the severity of the case. A friend of mine was lucky to be in the hospital before the worst of it kicked in. He nearly had a heart transplant, but in the end, didn't get on. He's been living for over 10 years with his heart regulated by a constant series of medications and cardiologist visits. There are a variety of types of cardiomyopathy, including hypertrophic, dilated and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Heart transplants are more commonly used in dilated cardiomyopathy but with appropriate care and today's drug treatments (including betablockers and ACE inhibitors) and heart devices (including biventricular pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators - ICDs) most affected people will never need a heart transplant. More details can be found on the Cardiomyopathy Association website

How long can you live without a beating heart?

You can not survive without your heart!. It pumps the blood throughout the entire body!. During a surgery like a heart transplant, they connect the body to a machine that "mimicks" the same function as the heart while the actual transplant is occuring!. If a person's heart stops from a heart attack or something, the longer it takes to revive the person, the higher chance there is for brain damage and eventually death to occur!. Let's say a person is revived after 45 minutes of CPR!.!.!.chances are there will be little to no brain activity left because of the damage that occured while the heart was not beating!. That's why it's so important to act fast when a person is having a heart attack!
