Disconnect the battery Remove the plastic column cover. between the ignition and the steering wheel towards the bottom you will see a pin hole. inside that pin hole you will see a little silver pin.you will need a metal pick that fits into the hole. insert the key and turn like you are going to start it.insert the pick, push the pin and pull the key out. the whole lock cylinder will come with the key. just pull straight out to the right --do not turn it should already be on the furthest forward position.

Remove the 3 recessed Phillips head screws from underneath the steering column just below the steering wheel. The plastic panel will drop down and the switch will be exposed on the opposite side of the column from the key. Unplug the harness from the rear of the switch. Grasp the switch at 6 and 12 o'clock and squeeze the lock tabs. The switch should pull out to the left.Reverse procedure for reinstallation.
Buying the book will help, but it just leads from one problem to another. A spring will pop in when taking the steering column apart. After you get the switch back in and go to put the steering column back on you can't get the spring to pop back out. We are fighting with this now. The easiest and less stressful way to change an ignition switch is to pay the cost and let someone else deal with the stress. Take it to a repair man.
I had the same problem in my 1993 Ford Taurus. I took it to my local Ford dealership and they charged me 409.12. The part is around 20.00 and the labor was 400.00. The part you need is called an actutator rod. But take it to a repair shop not a dealership.

The ignition switch is on the steering column about 12 inches from the floor. Remove the 2 screws that hold it on.

Ign. switch can be replaced. Remove steering column covers, switch is located on left side of column. The above is correct, but you will have to have the tumblers from your old ignition switch transferred to the new assembly IF they are not worn out. Do do the smart thing purchase the OEM as the aftermarket switch is a tad bit less pricey than the OEM, but why take a chance on an aftermarket item! NO, I do not work for a Chrysler/Dodge dealer!
If it's like the '96 Celica, it's actually easy. Once you remove the bottom panelling, the ignition switch sits on the back of the whole ignition lock assembly. Here is a picture of it: http://forums.off-road.com/toyota-suvs-trucks/174186-ignition-lock-disassembly.html Here is some good pictures of the actual switch http://www.oreillyauto.com/EW3/ProductDetail.do?id=1812614240&line=BWD&itemNumber=CS196&id=1355780635&line=BWD&itemNumber=CS196&id=1078488899&line=BWD&itemNumber=CS196&categoryIndex=2&didSearchFor=Ignition+Switch&vehicle=1996TOYOTACELICAGT4-2164%202.2L%20DOHC&bid=1208719500716&cycleCount=741¤tPage=0 BWD AUTOMOTIVE - Ignition Switch Item No: CS196 Now here is the easy part, push back the duct work, it just pulls apart, unscrew the two screws on the back and it's out....
