You need to go in through the back of the car inside to get at the panel that hides the access to the bulbs. In a 2001 xc 70 there are two access one on either side of the car. Once inside the panel there is another piece of black type insulation that pulls out and exposes the bulbs for brake, backup and turn signals. If you try and remove the lens cover from outside you will most likely break the lens as it is glued on.
The easiest way to change the switch is by removing the instrument cluster to access the switch. Then you just unplug the switch and remove the 2 screws holding it in place.

If the wires have been pulled off the 2 x red/black go to pin 15 on the switch. Red goes to 30 (pos. from battery). Blue goes to 50 (starter motor). Yellow to X. White/red to S. and blue/yellow to the un-named contact.
