In one version, Merlin changed King Arthur into various animals so that King Arthur could experience what it was like to be that animal, and what that animal perceived physically. In another version, Merlin was not a wizard, but a chieftain (leader), of a Celtic culture who used his experiences and followers to guide King Arthur to the take over of Britain from Roman rule.
