it could be your coil pack harness. the isolation is known to crack and cause a short and then not fire in a cylinder.
The tickover is not adjustable. It's electronically controlled, and factory set.
On the left side of the carb you will see a screw with a spring on it, turn this clockwise to lower tickover and anti clockwise to raise tickover.

You might want to check your lambda sensor, or distributor. Take it to a garage if you are unsure.
on computer controlled vehicles the iac adjusts engine tickover speeds by variing the amount of air it allows through a separate air bleed to the main airflow in throttle body if engine stalls when on tickover or when ac compressor cuts in may need resetting
It's designed to idle a little faster when the choke is on. If you think it's too high, get it checked at a dealership
try cleaning out the idle speed control valve with carb spray, soak it for about an hour and put it back. if it cures it your donr, if it cures it for a while u will need a new one. very common problem they build up with carbon deposites. thanks harry I had exactly the same problem and have found the solution. There are three rubber breather pipes under the inlet manfold on the front of the engine. On my engine all three had split. I replaced these and now no stalling, smooth tickover, problem solved! Unfortunately it can mean the head gasket has failed. Specifically between the combustion chamber and the water jackets. The white smoke could be steam and the funny odour is actually the coolant being burned with the air, fuel mixture. Assuming its a petrol, then the coolant is being sucked in on the tickover. But the combustion gases are forced back into the cooling system when driving. Take off the cap SLOWLY and not when its hot and rev it a bit. If you see bubbles, its a gasket:( but if its a diesel, then it might be as simple as the injector pump being out of timing!:)

hi, have experienced this a few times myself with gtis, the older ones run jetronic fuel injection system instead of motronic which is the main cause of the problem,i.e the older ones are all like this, several things to check air filter etc in case its choked, you can adjust the tps(on the side of the throttle body) by simply loosening the two bolts and turnin very gently whilst the car is runnin to increase tickover,which will help this. hope this helps
