LED lights are typically encased in a plastic envelope and the wiring for light strings is insulated with plastic. Plastics contain plasticizers that slowly evaporate. You will notice a stronger smell of those volatile materials coming from new plastic. Since LED light strings are relatively new (they've only been cheap enough to market since around 2008) you will probably be able to easily catch a whiff of that new plastic smell. The only other reason that an LED light would have an odor would be if it caught fire.

Oddly enough, squirrels at the Cincinnati Zoo are strangely attracted to LEDs. It may be the smell or something else that is different from the incandescent light strings that entices the squirrels to selectively eat them.
