Johann H. Schultze 1684 - 1744 German - Preformed experiments that paved the way towards chemical based Photography. It was known that certain chemicals darkened when exposed to sunlight. In 1727 Professor Schulzte heated silver nitrate. The compound did not darken so heat was eliminated as a cause of blackening. Schultze mixed silver nitrate with chalk and using the chalk like a pencil applied this compound to paper using a stencil. When exposed to sunlight the coated paper darkened.

Because they discovered that certain chemicals mixed with each other placed on certain media can create a copy of what's in front of that certain media, but they had to invent a whole series of machinery to perfect this chemical reaction to the point where it is actually called photography, and the product, a photograph. Hope this helped.
Photography was created because when Isaac Newton realized their are different colours in white, different scientists began to experiment with white and its colours leading to the creation of photography.

He couldn't draw. Seriously. When Niepce was alive, a popular artist's tool was the "camera obscura." If you know what a pinhole camera is, you're one step ahead of the game here. Instead of using film, the camera obscura had a sheet of really thin paper in it. An image appeared on the paper; to make it permanent you traced it with a pencil. Niepce didn't have a steady-enough hand to make good tracings, so he invented a way to make the camera do the work for him.
