There was no divorce. She and George Putnam were still married at the time of her dsappearance in 1937. She may well have had an "affair" with Gene Vidal, father of Gore Vidal. Gore says his father was definitely in love with Amelia--as was he at age ten. Before her marriage to George Putnam she presented him with a list of conditions which included "we will not be bound by any medieval code of fidelity."
