Enamel paint can be used on porcelain or iron bathtubs with great results, so I'll walk you through this process, just in case you're unsure about how to do this.

You Will Need These Materials

  • White vinegar
      • Water
    Towel Palm sander 150-grit sandpaper
  • Respirator mask Plastic bag Tape Epoxy enamel spray paint Oil based primer Oil based enamel paint 1200-grit wet/dry sandpaper

    Instructions

    • Clean the bath tub thoroughly with a mixture of white vinegar and water. The vinegar will help remove any dirt or greasy residue on the tub. Rinse the tub to remove the vinegar and dry it with a towel.

      • Equip a palm sander with 150-grit sandpaper. Sand the inside and the outside of the tub to roughen the surface, this will allow the paint to properly adhere to the bathtub.

      • Remove the fixtures of the bathtub or cover the fixtures with a plastic bag. Tape the bag down at the base of the fixtures to prevent painting them when you paint the inside of the tub.

    • Spray the inside of the bathtub with an epoxy enamel spray paint such as Krylon epoxy enamel paint. These paints are available at most home improvement stores and will resist moisture which is necessary for paint on the inside of a bathtub.

Paint the outside of the tub with an oil based metal primer such as Rust-Oleum metal primer. Let the primer dry completely.

    • Apply a coat of oil based enamel paint to the outside of the tub. Let the first coat of paint dry and then apply a second coat.

    • Sand the second coat of paint with 1200-grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet. This will help shine the enamel paint.

I hope this helps you out with your project! Good luck!

Before I paint a cork bulletin board it is recommended that I use a base of Shellac first before I spray paint so to eliminate bleeding through can i use clear enamel spray if i do not have shellac?

A clear enamel spray will just absorb into the cork. You might as well use the paint straight. Get a stain kill primer or a shellac based primer ant coat the cork prior to painting.

Was 1986 Chevrolet pickup painted with laquer paint and if so what sort of paint can i use without going down to bare metal?

Factory finish would have been an enamel paint. Even if it has been repainted, it is most likely enamel also. If the paint is old you can probably paint it with anything without it raising the old finish. If in doubt, you can spray a sealer on first and then the paint.

Is mat black paint easyer to spray a car with?

All paint in aerosol cans spray the same. However, matte paint on a car will look like, well, you know. If you are going to use spray cans to paint your car you really should use a gloss enamel. It's only a few cents more per can but the results will be 100 times better than using matte paint. I wrote a detailed answer to "How do you paint a car with spray cans" Try doing a search for it here. If you are unable to locate it, contact me through my profile and I'd be happy to help.

What can you use to paint over enamel paint on the walls?

You can use either enamel (oil-based) paint or latex (water-based) paint. If you are using latex paint, you need to use a primer (undercoat) first. The paint store will have a special primer that allows you to paint latex over enamel. If you are going to do this, it is also a good idea to either sand the enamel paint before you paint over it, or wash it with TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaner to remove the gloss.
