A map showing a small area in high detail is called a large scale map.Map scales are ratios:This is because the scale of the map will be expressed as a ratio, e.g. 1:10,000. This means that every 1 cm on the map will represent 10,000 cm on the ground.

For more detailed work, an even larger scale may be required e.g. 1:1,000. Therefore a given object will appear 10 times bigger on the 1:1,000 scale map than on the 1;10,000 giving more room for greater detail, but not able to cover as large an area.

Why this makes a more detailed map larger scale:Ratios can also be thought of as fractions. When expressed as a fraction 1/1,000 is clearly a larger number than 1/10,000. Therefore the smaller the number in the second half of the ratio, the closer the map is to being life size (and hence more detailed) and the larger the number it represents as a fraction. Hence large scale.
