If the question is in reference to after Odysseus' return from Troy when he is disguised, wouldn't you figure he would give himself away if he hugged his mother in front of Penelope or anyone else for that matter? He was disguised as an old man by the gods, i might add, and wanted to test his wifes faithfulness or something to that effect.
-- Odysseus can not hug his mother because she is dead. She is what is considered a shade and now lives in Hades. One of Hades laws dictates that she can't hug him.
