Upon meeting him, Alcinous offers Odysseus food, shelter, and gifts, demonstrating the value of xenia, or guest-friendship, in ancient Greek culture. He listens attentively to Odysseus's tales of his adventures and ultimately provides him with safe passage home to Ithaca. Alcinous's generosity and kindness play a crucial role in aiding Odysseus on his journey.

Alcinous had noticed how intently Odysseus listened to Demodocus's song about the Trojan War, and how emotional he became. This, along with Odysseus's physical appearance and the way he carried himself, led Alcinous to suspect that Odysseus might be connected to the events of the war.
Princess Nausicaa helps Odysseus by providing him with clothing and guidance when he washes ashore in Phaeacia. Odysseus is received warmly by King Alcinous who offers him hospitality and listens to his tale of adventures. Alcinous decides to help Odysseus return home.
