∙ 13y agoDepends. Some items, like cell phone chargers, are often made to work on both 120 V and 240 V circuits, in which case it's OK.
But a thing made only for 120 V will be destroyed immediately by the overload if connected to a 240 V source.

But it depends on the type of appliances you want to import and use in the U.S. Most electric and electronics will work fine in 110-120V but be worry about those with heat elements such as microwave ovens, tea pots, rice cookers, hair dryers and fan heaters will work but will be producing 20% more heat than their heating specifications which could result in a fire hazzard and/or shorter life span of the product. I have imported some non-heating element appliances and they work perfect with not a single increase in wattage or heat.

∙ 11y agoIn North America they do. Small appliance loads that usually plug into wall receptacles all depend upon 120 volts to operate. As the appliance loads get larger so does the voltage. Hot water tanks, baseboard heaters, electric ranges, clothes dryers, heat pumps, domestic water well pumps all depend on 240 volts to operate. The use of the 120/240 volt supply system allows the two voltages to be used simultaneously.
