Basically the monks were afraid the vikings (their biggest enemies) or any other raiders would rob them from their valuables. The viking were great traders but also good robbers. So for protection they build a tall stone structure, around the height of 25m to 40 m to be safe. There were 4 slit windows on top of the building, and a look out would look through every window to see if no one is coming, but if someone was trying to attack then he would basically ring the bell to warn everyone. The doors of the buildings were also high up so it would be hard for the enemies to get the valuables or get inside
