There was no way to return the bodies of US servicemen killed in France back to their homes during WWII, at least not while the war was still going on. Most transportation was by ship, of all types of cargo. There was little capability for air cargo, only a small amount of very high priority items could be moved overseas (or back) by air. The bodies would have required refrigeration. It was simply not possible with the technology of the times.

But, after the war, the next of kin of all US servicemen buried overseas were contacted, and the offer was made to return the remains then. This went on throughout the late 1940s, for several years after the war. Those men still buried overseas in the lovely American Battle Monuments Commission Cemeteries are still there because their families opted to leave them where they are, with their friends and comrades.
