George was the brother of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn. He was brought down with his sister and falsely accused of treason and incest. Most historians believe that the charges were manufactured to rid Henry of Anne due to her failure to produce a male heir, and to enable Henry to remarry with no legal impediment. As George was a highly influential courtier and was close to his sister, he was felt to be too dangerous to be allowed his liberty.
Charles V embassador, Eustace Chapuy, said in a report that the only evidence adduced to support the charge of adultery was that George had once spent a long time alone with his sister. He said that George was convicted merely on a presumption.
Be that as it may, George was convicted and originally sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered, although the sentence was later commuted to beheading. He was beheaded by axe on Tower Hill on 17th May 1536.
