Auschwitz was infamous in all respects but one. The Sonderkommando Revolt in October of 1944 when the crematoria was destroyed by the prisoners. This was an act of resistance and defiance in the face of certain death that can be considered as a unique event in human history.

____

The Sonderkommandos at Treblinka and Sobibor also revolted - in 1943 - and about 70 prisoners from Sobibor and 50 from Treblinka were still alive at the end of World War 2.

_____

Because it was a notoriously diabolical concentration camp during ww2. They committed mass murder, genocide upon thousands of Jewish people.

  • It was the biggest Nazi complex of camps (including 45 sub-camps).
  • The Birkenau section (Auschwitz II) included the biggest the Nazi extermination camp, with the highest death toll of all.
  • A number of prisoners, especially from Auschwitz III, the Auschwitz Women's Camp and some sub-camps, survived and wrote about their experiences. The best known of these are probably Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi.

  1. Auschwitz became a vast complex of camps, with three on the main site and a further 45 sub-camps. One section of Auschwitz II was the biggest Nazi extermination camp of all.
  2. The other parts of the Auschwitz complex were very harsh concentration camps.
  3. As the Auschwitz group of camps included so many concentration camps (as opposed to extermination camps) the group had far more survivors than camps that were only used as extermination camps, such as Treblinka.

Auschwitz is the most recognizable and infamous extermination camp due to its vast size, mainly. 1.1 million Jews (roughly) were exterminated there. It was the largest of the camps, and handled the extermination of undesirables with a ruthless efficiency.

Auschwitz is actually made up of two separate facilities: Auschwitz itself (a permanent labour camp) and Birkenau (where most of the mass murders actually took place). Birkenau is the camp generally shown in the photos, with the low brick entry gate and the railway sidings where "selection" took place (women, children, the elderly and the sick were chosen to go straight from the incoming trains to the gas chambers). Both camps are today open as museums.

___

By 1943 Auschwitz consisted of three camps on the main site and a further 45 sub-camps. As it was both an extermination camp and a set of concentration camps it had many more survivors than, say, Treblinka, which was an extermination (only) camp and had only about 50 survivors, mainly from the revolt and mass break-out. Some extermination camps, such as Maly Trostinets, had no known survivors and are almost completely unknown except to experts.

The Auschwitz group of camps was the biggest and it also had the highest death toll - a minimum of 1.1 million killed, of whom about 90% were Jews. (These are cautious figures and many historians were opt for somewhat higher figures).

Auschwitz is a tourist attraction because many people are fascinated by the effects of war. Many people also visit Auschwitz to learn about the war and the Holocaust. People have preserved and run Auschwitz as a tourist attraction to teach a lesson to future generations, that this must never happen again.
