What is the difference expiry date and best before?

Best before dates deal mainly with taste and performance, not food safety. For example, a cake mix that is beyond its "best before" date may not taste as good or may not rise as well. The cake, however, is fine to eat. I've never had a problem with a product consumed (well) after its best before date. Expiration dates tend to be more on refrigerated foods and should be consumed within a week or less after the date.

Which foods are safe to eat after the expiration date?

When the expiration date has passed on food or dairy products when it's still on the shelves of a supermarket, it should be considered to be unsafe for eating or drinking. In some cases a food label will say. "best to eat after the food opened 10 days or less " for example, this is an item purchased before its expiration date. Once it's opened the above notice on the label should be followed.
