Windows uses Protected Mode, which (normally) prohibits raw access to a disk drive and other hardware. Also, if a system is infected with a virus, that virus would already be active, and may affect the performance of the utility (i.e. by hiding itself, disabling the scanner, etc). By using a utility that does not need Windows, you can prevent a virus from loading, which allows for a clean scan. Or if the utility needs direct hardware access, it can do so without needing elevated privileges and/or special drivers.

Also, some motherboard functions, such as a BIOS flash, can only be performed in "unprotected mode", which is the BIOS's way of preventing a virus from infecting the BIOS (which would render the virus invincible, and/or completely damage the computer beyond repair).

Plato wanted to banish poets from ancient Greece because he thought they would?

Plato wanted to banish poets from Greece because he believed that poets had no intellectual utility, rather they played with the audeince's lower part of the mind which dealt with emotions. Plato believed that emotions had a negative effect on the men of Greece. This is a very elementary answer. Plato's 'Republic' has a chapter dedicated to this question.

Why is it useful to run the utilities from bootable media rather than from windows?

Windows too must be run from bootable media. This means that your question makes no sense (as you have worded it) and we can not therefore provide you with an answer.

How do you format your computers hard drive?

Boot from something else (CD, floppy...) then rather than let it go into installation mode, just format. Not all bootable CD's and floppies will have format on them, so you'll need the right disk. The point being, you can't format your boot disk, so if you're booting from C:, you won't be able to format it.

What could cause your HP to only start in MS-DOS and not Windows after you have made a start up disk?

Most likely, you've failed to remove the freshly created diskette from the drive, and your machine is booting from the floppy rather than the hard drive.

Floppy disk disadvantages?

Mainly lack of capacity. A floppy disk is usually 1.44 MB. Modern flash drives, hard drives, etc. are in the gigabytes and terabytes ! You can still use a floppy drive (I have a USB external floppy drive), but it will become more difficult to get new floppy disks as manufacturers abandon a rather antiquated media.

How do you get a floppy disk?

Go to a store that sells computer supplies or business store. I am not sure floppy disks are sold anymore because they are rather out dated and have been replaced by Cd's and other memory types.

What situation allows a floppy-less Windows XP installation?

All situations. Installation from floppy disk is the exception rather than the norm these days. Many systems do not have a floppy drive any more, now that USB flash drives, network installations and removable optical media (CD/DVD/BluRay) have become the norm.

Information on a floppy disk is stored as what?

It is stored as magnetic impulses, similar to how a tape recorder records, except that the data is digital rather than analog.
