The horn is an evolutionary adaptation to some function. Just like a Rhinoceros' horn, or a deer's antlers, or an elephant's tusks. If you wish to know what that adaptation is you must ask a more specific question.

Unicorns have best friends the ones who shed tears for the lost of a true horse. After a horse dies it become a Unicorn in Unicornipopia(which is in heaven). They rarely come to earth but they make babies up in heaven and send them down to a loyal finder of the horse.
