A century or two after the (re)discover of America by Christopher Columbus, people were stimulated and started colonizing faraway lands and hostile areas. So, the French mainly explored Africa and colonized a lot of current countries. Those territories lived under the French commandment and the French culture settled little by little even if people didn't actually liked the idea of changing their culture and their religion.

After their independence, those countries still kept the language they adopted when the French were there. That's why French is commonly spoken in Africa.

A few of the African french speaking countries are:

Chad

Comorous

Republic of the Conga

And many more.

For more info type it into Google and look on wikipedia.
