Colonists (not all Virginians but certainly many) decided to utilize free slave labor instead of the labor of skilled workmen to perform tasks on the farms and other places, because they claimed that they either had other jobs to do and did not have time for the original task, they felt too lazy to do the job by themselves (which sounds degrading but so was slave labor, so hey.) or they didn't have enough money to afford skilled workmen, which was a common problem, and not only this, but another important factor kicked in also.

Slave labor was also chosen not only for these reasons but also because it helped farmers and slave traders earn money. Slaves shipped in from Africa and taken to America were sold to those who wanted/needed their assistance, and therefore gave many people who sold slaves a decent income, sad to say. Also what may have added to this decision was probably the fact that there was a religious belief that in some parts of the country unfortunately still exists, that is racist and claims that in the world, God created one chosen people and one people to be on the bottom of the pyramid of purity. White Europeans, believing that they were the chosen people, were under the impression that blacks, being the opposite skin color as they, must be therefore at the bottom of the pyramid. The religious belief even goes so far as to state that whoever is at the bottom of said pyramid was created for one purpose and one purpose only: to toil and labor for the higher peoples. This probably factored into their decision to use slave labor in the states. Hope it helped! Ari

Why did the Virginia colony need African slave labor?

The Virginia colony turned to African slave labor primarily due to a shortage of cheap labor after the failure of indentured servitude as a sustainable source. African slaves were seen as a more reliable and long-term labor force for the increasing demand for labor-intensive crops like tobacco. Additionally, the transatlantic slave trade provided a steady supply of enslaved individuals to meet the colony's labor needs.
